They say college students always change their majors. I am here as a living example of someone who did that not once, not twice, but three times. I started off as a Fashion major at Cal Poly Pomona, transitioning to Art History after that. Then I moved on to study Communication at Irvine Valley College, and finally I completed my trip ‘round the world getting my degree in Television, Film, and Media in sunny Los Angeles at CSULA. Why the switching? In hindsight, I should have just entered as a Film major because that is what makes me the happiest, but everything is always 20/20 in hindsight. In the beginning I changed for practical reasons - I felt that Fashion and Art were two exclusive industries where I knew the job market would be aggressive. Henceforth, communication seemed more broad and marketable. Unfortunately, it didn’t make me excited to go to school for it. Then one January afternoon in 2017, I went to the Warner Brother tour in Burbank. I went because we got discounted tickets, and had no idea what was in store for me there. Something you should know is that I am a diehard Gilmore Girls fan. Can’t explain it, I just am. They filmed GG at the WB lot, and when I got there it was like I was living inside their world. I was walking the streets of Stars Hallow, and had this epiphany that real people make shows and movies that mean so much to me. I could be apart of creating sources of happiness and escape. The next week I applied to CSULA and the rest is history. The image one the left is me with Lorelei Gilmore’s Jeep on the WB lot.
Why teaching then?
I know feel as concrete as I could about my path and goals to become a High School teacher. I was fortunate enough to have teachers in my academic journey that have inspired me beyond the walls of the classroom. It would be a dream come true if I was able to impact people in that way. As fun as hands-on production is, to equip young adults with rich knowledge of Art and Film would make me more excited to wake up and do just that. I am beyond excited to be crossing the bridge from undergrad to grad school, and am ready to put in the hard work that I can make my goals a reality.
